Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Ursula, Augsburg

The origins of the convent date back to 1335, when the cleric Berthold Rehm donated a house in Augsburg's Lechviertel to the Beguines, who called themselves the “Sisters of Voluntary Poverty.” This community, which had previously relied on begging, received generous endowments. In 1431, the sisters submitted themselves as regulated tertiaries to the spiritual guidance of the neighboring Dominican monastery of St. Magdalena. A year later, in 1432, the convent was consecrated to Saint Ursula. The current convent church of St. Ursula was built in 1520 and underwent renovations between 1720 and 1730. During the Reformation in Augsburg, the convent lived in Dillingen from 1537 to 1548. The convent was under the territorial sovereignty of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg. In 1695, official enclosure was introduced. In the 18th century, the nuns dedicated themselves to sewing, embroidery, and nursing. As part of the secularization in Bavaria, the convent was dissolved in 1803, with the remaining 21 nuns granted lifelong residency. After its re-establishment in 1828, novices could again be admitted, and the convent subsequently operated a girls' school for the parish of St. Ulrich. In 1894, the sisters reacquired the convent buildings from the city and state. During World War II, the entire convent was severely damaged, but school operations could resume in a limited capacity as early as 1945. The convent church was simply rebuilt by 1947, and in the following years, the school and the convent itself were gradually restored. Due to cramped conditions, a modern secondary school building was constructed on an adjacent plot by 1983.
