Dominikanerkloster Cammin

The monastery was founded around 1228 when Stoizlaus, son of the late nobleman Tetizlaus, granted land next to St. Aegidius Church in the then-town of Cammin to the monks. This donation was later confirmed by Duke Wartislaw III. The first Dominican monks arrived from Krakow. Over the centuries, the monastery received numerous donations and endowments from Pomeranian dukes, the Cammin cathedral chapter, and citizens. With the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania, the monastery's existence came to an end. In 1539, the last prior, Kasper Schulte, requested permission to remain in the monastery until the end of his life. The official dissolution of the monastery and its assets occurred in 1540. Archaeological excavations in 2004 and 2012 uncovered the foundations of St. Aegidius Church and the cloister, as well as a cemetery with approximately 500 burials.

The former Dominican Monastery is situated in Cammin, a historic town in the Vorpommern-Greifswald region, which belongs to the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany.

The remains of the monastery are primarily documented today through archaeological findings, which provide an idea of the structure and extent of the former complex. There is no information available regarding the current use of the former monastic buildings.
