The founding of the Greifswald Dominican Monastery is dated to the year 1254. Duke Wartislaw III of Pomerania provided the Dominicans with a plot of land on the city wall, at the border between Greifswald's then-new town and old town. Brothers from the Dominican convent in Kammin, founded in 1228, including the first prior Berthold and the lector Florentius, began the construction of the new monastery. Originally belonging to the Polish province of the order, the monastery transferred to the Teutonic province in 1280 and to the separated Saxon province (Saxonia) in 1303. This led to disputes with the Stralsund Dominican Monastery over territorial boundaries, which were settled in 1472. From 1472, the monastery again belonged to the Polish province of the order. During a split within the Dominican Order in the 15th century, it joined the Dutch congregation, but reform efforts stalled under Polish provincial administration. It was not until 1501 that the monastery was again placed under the Saxon province of the order at the request of Duke Bogislaw X and the Greifswald city council, an assignment finally confirmed by Pope Leo X in 1517. The Greifswald convent enjoyed high esteem until its dissolution in the 16th century and attracted many Dominicans to the University of Greifswald. Important figures such as the jurist Johann Meilof joined the order and bequeathed valuable collections to the monastery. The monastery housed study facilities for logic and theology. The three-aisled monastery church contained altars of various guilds and brotherhoods. Following the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania, the monastery was secularized in 1534. The prior and brothers were allowed to continue living there and received a portion of their income. The monastery church was approved for demolition in 1558 due to dilapidation.
