The site of the current monastery was originally occupied by the Slavic Bucu Castle. Around 1143, a princely castle of the Counts of Schauenburg was likely erected there. After the Danish conquest of Lübeck in 1201, Albrecht von Orlamünde resided here as governor. In 1221, the castle and cathedral city were unified with the burgher city by a common wall. After Albrecht von Orlamünde was captured, the Lübeckers seized the opportunity to confirm the Barbarossa Privilege in 1226 and demolished the princely castle to preempt any renewed claims to city rule. In gratitude for the victory over the Danes in the Battle of Bornhöved on Mary Magdalene's Day in 1227, the Lübeckers built a monastery on this site, which they handed over to the Dominican Order in 1229. Following a city fire in 1276, the monastery was rebuilt, including the monastery church of St. Mary Magdalene, a Brick Gothic basilica. This church underwent several renovations and expansions, including the addition of a three-aisled hall choir with a representative show facade facing Burgstraße around 1399–1401. In the early 15th century, notable scholars such as the lecturer Hermann Korner, author of the Chronica novella, worked here.

The Dominican Monastery in Lübeck is situated in the northern part of Lübeck's Old Town, a city in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is strategically located between the Burgtor and Koberg.

After the monastery's dissolution during the Reformation in 1531, the building served as a poorhouse, while the church functioned as an evangelical, non-parochial church. Due to structural issues and a collapse in 1818, the church was demolished, though the north wall and some chapels were preserved. Today, the former monastery building houses a museum and serves as a central point for cultural and historical exploration.
