Dominikanerkloster Magdeburg (Paulinerkloster)

The Dominicans settled in Magdeburg around 1224, initially residing briefly in the Neustadt before acquiring a courtyard west of Breiter Weg in 1225. There, not far from St. Sebastian's Collegiate Church, the convent and its monastery church were established. Archbishop Albrecht supported the settlement and allocated the necessary areas to the Pauliner monks. The monastery church was quickly built and completed by 1248 at the latest. In the 13th century, the monastery developed into an intellectual hub, hosting a Studium Generale for the Saxon Dominican province and attracting figures like the mystic Wichmann von Arnstein. Mechthild of Magdeburg was also influenced by it. In 1284, the monastery church was the scene of a murder of Knight Falke von Reder, commissioned by Archbishop Erich. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery suffered from a general decline in discipline, leading to an order reformation in 1456. The monastery existed until the 16th century, with the monastery church remaining in use until 1895.

The former monastery grounds were located on the west side of Breiter Weg in Magdeburg, south of the historic old town in the Stiftsfreiheit area. It extended west to Prälatenstraße. Today, the northern part of the Magdeburg Justice Center and areas north of it, south of Leiterstraße, occupy the former monastery site.

Of the original monastery buildings, only the Domkeller and two entrance portals remain today. The subsequent Paulinerkirche, which was used until 1895, also no longer exists. The area is now part of the urban development and infrastructure.
