Dominikanerkloster Mühlhausen

The Dominican Monastery in Mühlhausen was founded in 1289 on a site that previously belonged to the outer bailey of the imperial castle. The German Order knight and later Bishop Christian von Mühlhausen sold the former royal fief to the Dominicans, who immediately began constructing a large Gothic monastery church. The Preacher's Church, the third-largest sacred building in the city, was completed in 1348. A fire in 1487, which devastated the northeastern quarter of the old town, also caused significant damage to the monastery. Following the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1542, and the Dominicans left the city. Parts of the monastery and church were used as a municipal building yard, and the churchyard served as a plague cemetery. The Great City Fire of 1689 severely damaged the then-empty Preacher's Church again, after which it was dismantled and used as a quarry. Only wall sections integrated into later residential buildings survived.

The monastery was situated in the northeastern part of the medieval imperial city of Mühlhausen, at the edge of the northern city wall, just below the former imperial castle grounds. It was bordered to the north by Mönchsgasse and to the south by Steinweg, a central street of the upper town.

Today, only sparse remnants of the former grandeur of the Dominican Monastery of Mühlhausen are visible. A section of the church's west wall with a two-light Gothic window and a remnant of the monastery buildings to the north are preserved. Wall remains of the south wall, including window jambs, are also discernible in the adjacent residential buildings. Pillar foundations and a capital of the first arcade arch bear witness to the arcades of the northern aisle.
