Dominikanerkloster Nürnberg

The Nuremberg Dominican Monastery was founded in 1234. Its associated monastery church was built around 1275, while the monastery buildings were completed by approximately 1288 and the cloister by 1328. Within the order, the monastery quickly gained high esteem and repeatedly hosted the Dominican General Chapter. It maintained an intensive exchange with the scholastics of the University of Paris. At the end of the 14th century, the Observant movement was introduced, radiating from Nuremberg to large parts of Germany. Important figures such as the reformer Johannes Nider and the humanist Johannes Cuno were active here. In the course of the Reformation and after the Nuremberg Religious Colloquy of 1525, the convent adapted to the new circumstances. In 1543, the monastery, whose community had significantly shrunk, was dissolved, and its assets were transferred to the city council. The premises subsequently served as the council library and official residences. The monastery church was rebuilt after a fire in 1396, later handed over to the Aegidianum for use, and demolished in 1807 after a partial collapse.

The former Dominican Monastery is located in the city of Nuremberg, in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany.

Parts of the original monastery buildings are still preserved at Burgstraße 6. Today, they house the office of the Evangelical City Dean. The former monastery church no longer exists; an extension of the city hall now stands in its place.
