Dominikanerkloster St. Albert

The roots of the Dominicans in Leipzig extend to 1231, when a first monastery was founded. Its church, the Paulinerkirche, was consecrated in 1240 and existed until the Reformation in 1539, when it was dissolved and later handed over to the university. The current monastery property was acquired by the order's province in 1931, and a chapel was consecrated in the same year. The construction of a monastery was prevented by the Nazi dictatorship. After World War II, Father Gordian Landwehr initiated the construction of a monastery church, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1951 and consecrated in 1952. In the following decades, the complex was expanded, including a novitiate. In 1994, a community of Dominican friars and sisters was established, which was elevated to a convent in 1996. This led to the construction of a new monastery building with a tower and the St. Magdalena bell, inaugurated in 1998.

The Monastery St. Albert is located in Leipzig, a major city in Saxony, Germany. It is situated in the Wahren district on Georg-Schumann-Straße.

The monastery church, a hall church made of plastered brickwork with a bell tower, was renovated externally in 1999 and has been undergoing internal renovation since 2001. It houses an organ by Alfred Schmeisser from 1954 with 1200 pipes and three bells. Key architectural elements are round arches, found in windows, gallery, and chancel openings. The chancel has been redesigned several times, most recently in the 1970s, and features works by the Noack bronze foundry.
