Kloster Walberberg

The monastery was founded in 1925, after the Teutonia Dominican Province acquired and renovated the medieval Rheindorfer Castle, dating from 1140, in 1924. The monastery was named in honor of the scholar Albertus Magnus, who lived in the 13th century and is buried in Cologne. From 1934 to 1974, the monastery housed the Albertus Magnus Academy, a philosophical-theological college of the order, where many German Dominicans completed part of their studies. During World War II, the complex was expropriated and used as a military hospital before being returned to the order in 1945, and the academy resumed its teaching. After the war, the monastery also housed the Walberberger Institute, a residential adult education center, and the Institute for Social Sciences. In June 1945, it was the scene of an important program commission that prepared the founding of the CDU. The Dominicans of Walberberg served as advisors to various parties in the Federal Republic during the Bonn Republic era. Due to cost reasons and a lack of new recruits, the monastery was dissolved in 2007, and the last service took place in November of that year.

The monastery is located in Bornheim-Walberberg, a locality in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated on the slopes of the Vorgebirge, above the Cologne Bay, between the cities of Cologne and Bonn.

After the monastery's dissolution in 2007, the complex was sold in March 2008 to a private corporate group. This group operates facilities there in the areas of assisted living, care, hotel, and gastronomy. The extensive monastery library, comprising approximately 160,000 volumes, is now on permanent loan to the Archdiocesan Cathedral and Diocesan Library in Cologne and is publicly accessible. From 2008 to 2011, the building also housed the Walberberger Local History Museum, which has since moved to the parish center in 2012.
