Dominikanerkloster Treysa

Founded in the late 13th century, the monastery was admitted to the Dominican provincial chapter "Teutonia" in 1287 and became part of the newly established "Saxonia" provincial chapter from 1303. The Counts of Ziegenhain, as lords of the town, significantly supported the convent, likely by donating the building plot and providing further funding. Citizens and the lower nobility also contributed to the wealth of the Treysa Dominicans through donations and loans, so that by the late 14th century, the convent was considered very affluent. Around 1330, construction began on the monastery church, an asymmetrical hall church with a southern aisle. The Dominicans maintained a Latin school within the monastery, and provincial chapters of the order took place here in 1355 and 1428. From 1494, the convent followed the stricter rules of the "Congregatio Hollandica" of the Observants. Following the introduction of the Reformation in Hesse, the monastery was dissolved in 1527, and the remaining monks were compensated.

The monastery was located in Treysa, a district of Schwalmstadt in the Schwalm-Eder district of Hesse, Germany. It was situated at an elevation of 239 meters above sea level on the southwestern city wall, between the Angels- and Dippelstor in the upper town, at today's Kirchplatz 1.

The former monastery church has been used as an evangelical parish church since 1531. After secularization, the convent buildings initially served as a school and from 1699 as the site of a wool cloth manufactory, founded by Huguenot refugees. This manufactory supplied fabrics and linings for the uniforms of the Hessian infantry regiments until 1714 but ceased operations in 1737. The original monastery buildings were demolished in the 19th century.
