Dominikanerkloster Koblenz

The former Dominican monastery in Koblenz, once a significant spiritual center, is now a cultural monument in Rhineland-Palatinate. Of the original complex, which was located in the heart of the city, primarily an impressive Rococo portal remains today. It commemorates the long history of this site, which shaped the cityscape and religious life for centuries.
History+
The Dominicans settled in Koblenz at the beginning of the 13th century and established their monastery in Weißer Gasse. The first service took place there in 1233. After a fire in 1245, the monastery church was completed and consecrated in 1260. Supported by donations from wealthy citizens, the monastery expanded until 1489. The church was considered one of the earliest Gothic buildings on the Middle Rhine. In 1688, the complex suffered severe damage during the siege by French troops, after which the buildings were reconstructed in 1713. The Rococo portal visible today was created in 1754. In the course of secularization in 1802, the monastery was dissolved and subsequently used as a Prussian garrison hospital. During an air raid in 1944, the entire complex was destroyed. After the war, it was decided to demolish the ruins, with only the Rococo portal being preserved.
