The Dominican monastery in Wismar was founded between 1292 and 1293, at a time when the Mecklenburg prince Heinrich the Pilgrim was held captive in Arabia. The first Dominicans, also known as “Preaching Friars,” were already present in Wismar in 1292, and the canonical approval for the establishment was granted in 1293 by the Order's General Chapter in Lille. Initially part of the Teutonia Dominican Province, the monastery was assigned to the Saxon Province in 1303. The Mecklenburg sovereign donated the land for the monastery's construction, and in 1294, the Dominicans were integrated into the city's legal framework through an admission contract, which, among other things, prohibited them from brewing beer. They undertook important tasks such as preaching in St. Mary's Church and served as witnesses in legal proceedings. From 1297, the friars began constructing the monastery using brick, for which they had their own brickworks available from 1305. In the 14th century, a large monastery church in the style of a mendicant order church was built. The high Gothic choir with a polygonal 5/8 apse, constructed by Martin Kremer, is the only surviving part of the church. The three-aisled nave with five bays was possibly built around 1320/1330. The church was consecrated in 1397 by Bishop Detlef von Berkentin of Ratzeburg.

The Black Monastery is located in the Hanseatic city of Wismar, a city in Northwest Mecklenburg, part of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany.

Today, the Dominican Monastery Wismar is protected as a historical monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and bears witness to the former presence of the Dominican Order in the region. The preserved choir of the monastery church is a remarkable example of Brick Gothic architecture.
