The Worms Cathedral Foundation, once a significant monastery, was the central spiritual institution at Worms Cathedral. It played a crucial role in both ecclesiastical and secular affairs of the diocese, shaping the Rhineland-Palatinate region for centuries.

History+

The Cathedral Chapter, which operated independently from the 13th century and was thus free from the bishop's influence, consisted exclusively of nobles. Bourgeois members were no longer admitted after 1281. The canons, often from the Palatinate, fulfilled their residency obligations irregularly and were frequently represented by vicars. Around 1270, the chapter comprised about 50 prebends, a number that decreased to 43 by 1475. Later, the number was set at 35 canons and 6 prebendaries, with the latter required to be ordained priests. Following the Reformation and the subsequent reduction in parishes within the Diocese of Worms, the number of canons was reduced to 13 in the 17th century. From then on, the chapter only elected bishops who already held benefices outside the Diocese of Worms. After the Thirty Years' War, it completely abandoned electing a bishop from its own ranks, instead postulating only external spiritual imperial princes, which further significantly increased its influence on the administration of the diocese.
