Domus Flavia

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

On the Palatine Hill in Rome stands the Domus Flavia, an ancient palace. Once part of an imperial complex, it has preserved remains.

History+

Construction of the Domus Flavia began under Emperor Domitian after 80 AD and was completed in 92 AD. This new construction became necessary after a three-day fire in 80 AD, not to be confused with Nero's Great Fire of Rome, destroyed Nero's Domus Transitoria and the Domus Tiberiana. To create a level area for the building project, which included the Domus Flavia, the Domus Augustana, and the Palatine Stadium, a depression between the two peaks of the Palatine Hill was filled in.
