The Fortress-Tower can be visited

The Apollonienturm, also known as Donaufestung Linz Tower IX, is a component of the former Maximilian Tower Line in Upper Austria. This fortress was part of a defense system erected around the city of Linz in the early 19th century to protect it from enemy attacks.

History+

The idea for the Linz Tower Line originated with Archduke Maximilian Joseph of Austria-Este, who, after the experiences of 1809 when Napoleon's advance on Vienna could not be stopped, proposed an imperial fortification system. This envisioned securing strategically important locations with a chain of individual towers that would mutually cover each other and form a far-advanced defensive line. Only the fortification of Linz was realized. In 1828, Maximilian had a test tower built at his own expense on the Freinberg, which successfully withstood demolition and shelling tests despite adverse conditions.
