History+

The Danube Fortress Linz, also known as the Maximilian Tower Line, was a defense system erected around the city of Linz in the early 19th century. The initiative came from Archduke Maximilian Joseph of Austria-Este, who, after the experiences of the Napoleonic Wars, recognized the need for better defense of strategically important locations. His concept envisioned a ring of individual, fortified towers that mutually covered each other and formed an advanced defense line to keep enemy artillery away from the city. Although Maximilian proposed an empire-wide fortification system, only the one in Linz was realized.
