The Castle can be visited

The Donjon de Pons, a medieval keep, is located in the town of Pons, in the Charente-Maritime department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, France. It is an example of Romanesque keeps in western France.

History+

The origins of the keep date back to the 11th century, when a defensive tower stood on this site. However, this predecessor was destroyed in 1179 by Richard the Lionheart during the suppression of a noble rebellion in Saintonge. The current donjon was built in 1187 by Geoffrey III of Pons, a vassal of Richard the Lionheart. In 1912, the donjon was classified as a historical monument. The battlements with their corner turrets and the round arch frieze below were added in 1904.
