Donnington Castle is a castle ruin near Newbury in West Berkshire, England. It is known for its well-preserved gatehouse with two towers, which was once equipped with a portcullis.

History+

The origins of Donnington Castle date back to the 14th century. In 1386, Richard de Abberbury received permission from King Richard II to build a stone fortification with battlements at this location. It is presumed that a fortified court, possibly a wooden castle, existed here even before. Its strategically favorable position at the intersection of important trade routes made it a point.
