Dronninglund Slot (Castle)
Dronninglund Slot, a historic castle in North Jutland, Denmark, combines medieval origins with Baroque elegance. Originally a Benedictine nunnery, it was transformed into a stately Baroque castle in the 18th century and now serves as a castle hotel.
History+
The origins of the current castle lie in a Benedictine nunnery called Hundslund, whose exact founding year is unknown. By the 13th century, it was already one of the most significant properties in North Jutland. Through a donation from Queen Margrethe I, the monastery's holdings expanded to over 100 farms by the turn of the 15th century. After the Reformation, Hundslund fell to the Crown and was granted as a fief until the end of the 16th century, during which time the complex was developed into a castle with an associated farm. Between 1690 and 1729, the estate was in the direct possession of the royal family and received its current name under Queen Charlotte Amalie. In the subsequent centuries, ownership changed hands multiple times, including the Moltke, von Plessen, and Schimmelmann families.
