In the heart of Dublin stands Dublin Castle, a significant historical complex that served as the center of power in Ireland for centuries. Originally a fortress, it evolved into a castle complex whose current appearance is largely shaped by constructions from the 18th and 19th centuries.
History+
The origins of Dublin Castle date back to the 10th century, when a fortification already existed on this site. In 1170, it fell to the Normans, who significantly expanded it between 1204 and 1230. From this early construction phase, the Record Tower, dating from 1226, has survived to this day. Until 1922, the castle housed the British administration of Ireland. The representative State Apartments, built between 1680 and 1830, still serve as the venue for important state occasions, including the inauguration of the Irish President and meetings of the European Council. The former royal chapel from the 18th century was converted into the Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity in 1943 and now functions as a cultural center.
