The origins of Dunasead Castle date back to 1217, when the Anglo-Norman settler FitzStephens erected a tower on the foundations of an older fortification at this site. In 1305, the castle suffered a blow when it was attacked and destroyed by the MacCarthys. After its reconstruction, ownership passed to the O'Driscoll family. The castle's current appearance dates back to 1620. In the mid-17th century, in 1645, the castle fell to Oliver Cromwell. Dunasead Castle fell into disrepair but was extensively restored in the 20th century.
