Dunbar Castle

Dunbar Castle, once a fortress of Scotland, overlooks the harbor of the town of Dunbar in East Lothian. Its ruins date back to the time of the Votadini.
History+
The origins of Dunbar Castle date back to the 7th century, when it served as a defensive position for the Kingdom of Bernicia. In 678, Saint Wilfrid was imprisoned here. Later, King Kenneth MacAlpin is said to have burned the castle, although he is also mentioned as its owner. In the 10th and early 11th centuries, the castle lords played a role in defending against Norse invaders. The construction of the first stone castle is attributed to Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria, who sought refuge with Malcolm III of Scotland after his exile from England.
