History+
Three castles were built on the rock of Dundonald Castle. The first two fortifications from the 12th and 13th centuries are no longer visible. The preserved fortified residential tower was built in 1371. It was constructed for Robert II Stewart. The Stewarts ruled here for over 350 years before the castle fell into ruin from the 17th century onwards. After the castle was abandoned, the family moved to Old Auchans House, built around 1600.
