The Dung Gate, also known as the Midden Gate, is a historic city gate in Jerusalem that provides access to the Old City. It is strategically located southwest of the Temple Mount and remains an important traffic hub that continues to play a central role in urban life today.
History+
The name Dung Gate has biblical roots and can be found in the Book of Nehemiah. As early as the 2nd century, the gate was used to transport waste out of the city. In 1540, Süleyman had the original, rather small gate constructed. A first expansion took place in 1948 by the Jordanians after the Jaffa Gate was closed to traffic. The Dung Gate finally received its current form in 1985 under Mayor Teddy Kollek to meet the demands of modern traffic.
