Dunluce Castle, one of Ireland's most significant medieval castle ruins, majestically perches on a basalt outcrop along the rugged north coast. Situated between Portballintrae and Portrush, this imposing complex narrates tales from bygone eras and offers breathtaking sea views.
History+
The origins of Dunluce Castle stretch far back; it is believed that a pre-Christian ringfort once stood on this site. By 1513, the castle was held by the McQuillian family, before being taken over by the MacDonnells in 1584 after repeated sieges. A notable event was the grounding of a Spanish Armada treasure ship nearby in October 1588, the plundered proceeds of which were used to enhance the castle. In the mid-17th century, the complex was abandoned. One legend suggests this occurred because the sound of the sea became too loud for the inhabitants, while another version cites the collapse of the newly built kitchen, along with its staff, into the sea in 1639 as the reason.
