The ruin of Dunseverick Castle stands majestically on a peninsula in Northern Ireland, offering a fascinating glimpse into bygone eras. Once a significant fortress, today only a small remnant bears witness to its former glory, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the coastal landscape.
History+
The site of Dunseverick Castle was utilized as a promontory fort even before the castle's construction. Between the years 1000 and 1320, and again from the mid-15th century, Dunseverick was owned by the O'Cahan Clan. The castle was unsuccessfully attacked in 1641 and remained inhabited until its destruction in 1650 by Cromwell's troops. A small residential tower survived the destruction but collapsed into the sea in 1978. The last Irish owner, Giolla Dubh O'Cahan, anglicized his name to McCain/O'Kane in 1660. A unique feature of the castle was the spring on its north side, known as Tubber Phadrick or St. Patrick's Well, which is counted among Ireland's holy wells.
