Duntulm Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

On the Trotternish Peninsula of the Isle of Skye, Duntulm Castle, a ruin, stands on a basalt rock. Originally built in the 14th century on the remains of an Iron Age broch, it served as a fortification and residence for the Clan MacDonald of Sleat.

History+

The origins of Duntulm Castle date back to the 14th century, when a fortification was built over an older Iron Age broch, known as Dun Dhaibhidh. In the 16th century, the complex underwent modifications, including the addition of a second tower to the irregular outer walls that enclosed a four-story keep. In 1549, the fortress was mentioned as the “castell of Donntwyline” in the possession of Donald Gromsone. From 1618, Duntulm served as the residence of Donald Macdonald (Donald Gorm Og), the ninth clan chief, who had previously lived in Dun Scaich. He had contractually committed in 1617 to maintain the fortress.
