On Mönchsberg in Salzburg, Austria, above the Salzburg Festival Houses, is the Edmundsburg. This three-story, cubic building is now a research center.

History+

Between 1694 and 1696, Edmundsburg was built as a summer residence for the abbots, commissioned by Archabbot Edmund Sinnhuber OSB of St. Peter's Abbey. Later, it served as a boarding house for monastery staff. Salzburg's second lightning rod was installed in 1786 under Father Dominicus Beck. After Salzburg's annexation to the Habsburg Monarchy in 1816, the property changed hands in 1834. From 1853, Edmundsburg housed an "Institution for Poor Boys," supported by Empress Carolina Augusta with 10,000 guilders. Educators from St. Peter's Abbey cared for the boys. Due to demand, another building was added in 1902. Expropriated during the Nazi era, Edmundsburg continued to serve as a boarding school. After World War II, Father Eberhard Steinbrecher OSB took over management until 1959.
