St. Johannes Evangelist und Petrus

An initial sacred building on this site was restored after a fire in 1142. Between 1224 and 1230, under the provosts Burchard and Konrad von Lichtenau, a new basilica with three naves and presumably three apses was constructed. In the 15th century, these apses were renewed in a polygonal form. Following complete destruction during the Thirty Years' War, reconstruction took place from 1666 to 1674, utilizing the Romanesque walls. Master mason Christoph Weigel directed the work, which included the addition of a narthex and the elevation of the central nave. The octagonal tower octagon was added in 1622, with the characteristic onion dome following in 1654. After the church's completion, the monastery was also rebuilt under Weigel. A comprehensive redesign in the late Rococo style occurred in 1776 under Provost Wilhelm III. Schöllhorn by the collegiate master builder Joseph Dossenberger the Younger. During this period, the ceiling frescoes by Jakob Fröschle and Konrad Huber were also created. After secularization, the collegiate church remained as a parish church.

The church is situated in Ursberg, a municipality in the Bavarian-Swabian district of Günzburg in Bavaria, Germany.

The former monastic church now serves as the Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. John the Evangelist and Peter. It is protected as an architectural monument in Bavaria and houses rich furnishings, including stucco work and frescoes by Jakob Fröschle and Konrad Huber. The high altar by Johann Wagner and Johann Pflaum from 1733 features an altarpiece by Konrad Huber. Also noteworthy is the Romanesque cross from the early 13th century. The main organ by Johann Nepomuk Holzhey from 1776 was restored in 1999.
