Museum, youth center, food bank

The former Franciscan monastery in Eichstätt, Bavaria, is a historic monument that once played a significant role in the religious life of the region. It is characterized by its eventful founding history and its later transformation into an educational and cultural center.

History+

The monastery's foundation dates back to a donation by the citizen Rumpf from Berching, which was made in 1723 with the approval of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt, Johann Anton I. Knebel von Katzenelnbogen. The first four Franciscans initially occupied a provisional lodging. However, the start of construction for a hospitium in the same year was abruptly halted because the bishop had disregarded the required consent of the Eichstätt cathedral chapter. The neighboring Benedictine monastery of Plankstetten also raised an objection, as it held the patronage rights for the parish of Beilngries. After lengthy negotiations that led to Rome, an agreement was reached. In 1736, the bishop again granted permission, this time with the consent of Plankstetten Abbey. Under Abbot Maurus Xaverius Herbst of Plankstetten (1742–1757), the relationship between the monasteries permanently improved. Around 1800, four to five priests and one to two lay brothers lived in the monastery, which was dissolved in 1806 during the secularization in Bavaria.
