Kloster Unterliezheim

The founding of the Benedictine nunnery of Liedesheim, today's Unterliezheim, is dated to the year 1026. Count Adalbert and his wife Judita handed over the abbey to Bishop Bruno of Augsburg. The exact origin of the noble couple cannot be clearly proven due to the lack of family names in the documents of that time, but a connection to the Dillingen count family, in whose county the monastery was located, is suspected. A later tradition from 1152 names Countess Guta von Werdenberg as the founder. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1542. In 1632, part of the former monastic estates was handed over as a Hofmark to the Benedictine monastery of Sankt Ulrich und Afra Augsburg, which established an expositure, later a provostry, there. Under Provost Cölestin Mayer, the later Imperial Abbot, the monastery church was rebuilt by 1740. Its interior is in the Rococo style and houses a 15th-century Pietà. The secularization in 1802/03 led to the dissolution of the monastery and the Hofmark; the monastery church of St. Leonhard became a parish church.

The former monastery building is located in Unterliezheim, a district of the municipality of Lutzingen, in the Bavarian district of Dillingen an der Donau in Germany.

The former monastery church of St. Leonhard now serves as a parish church. Between 1996 and 2013, the monastery grounds were the venue for rose shows, which attracted numerous visitors and where, in 2010, a new rose was named after the presumed founder, "Gräfin Gutta."
