Eilean Donan Castle

Near the village of Dornie in the Scottish Highlands stands Eilean Donan Castle. It is renowned as the ancestral seat of Clan Macrae and is considered one of Scotland's most frequently photographed structures. Its name, "Donan's Island," honors a 6th-century hermit. The lowland castle is situated on Loch Duich, on a small promontory that transforms into an island at high tide, accessible only via a stone pedestrian bridge.
History+
The castle's origins date back to 1220, when it was constructed under Alexander II of Scotland. According to historical accounts, it served as a refuge for Robert the Bruce during his flight from the English.
