Eldenburg Castle

Eldenburg was built before 1300 as Geldenitz Castle. In 1310, ownership was transferred by Margrave Waldemar to the von Alsleben family as a fief. In 1465, ownership changed to Dietrich von Quitzow. From 1588-90, the castle was rebuilt on the walls of the old fortress. From then on, the castle was named Eldenburg. In 1719, the Eldenburg line of the Quitzows died out, and the castle reverted to the king. In 1812, ownership changed to the Lords von Wangenheim. In 1881, the castle burned down and was only partially rebuilt thereafter. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. From 1946-49, the senseless demolition and dismantling of the castle for building material extraction took place on the orders of the communists. Today, only the so-called Quitzow Tower and the Tithe Granary remain.
