Elgersburg Castle, a fortress, stands on a porphyry rock above the village of Elgersburg in the Ilm district of Thuringia. Originally built as a protective structure, it now serves as a cultural center.

History+

The first documented mention of Elgersburg Castle dates back to 1088. It was built on the foundations of an older castle, which belonged to the Counts of Kevernburg and the Lords of Witzleben and served to secure the Salzmannstraße. Gerhard Edler von Grumbach, also known as Edler Gerhard or Elger, is considered the builder, and his name is reflected in the place name. In 1156, a Markward von Elgersburg is mentioned. The castle was sold in 1288 for 400 marks of silver to the County of Henneberg.
