Elisabethinerinnenkloster Azlburg, Straubing

The monastery, dedicated to Saint Anne, was founded in 1748 by the Elisabethinen Monastery in Prague. The order was dedicated to nursing the sick and intended to establish a hospital. After initial difficulties in acquiring a suitable plot of land in Munich and Straubing, partly due to existing hospitals and concerns from local pharmacists and doctors, the Azlburg was acquired for 8,000 guilders with the support of Elector Karl Theodor. The property had previously been owned by Straubing noble families for several centuries and had been severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War. In 1749, the first five nuns moved in, and soon after, novices were admitted. Under Superior Maria Clara Demlin, a collection for the construction of a church and a hospital was carried out in 1786. The existing building parts were integrated into the construction of a four-winged, early classical complex by the Munich court architect Andreas Baumgartner. The church was consecrated in 1798, featuring stucco work by Mathias Obermayr from Straubing and wall and ceiling paintings by Franz Xaver Merz depicting biblical themes of nursing. In 1807, during the secularization in Bavaria, the monastery was dissolved. The government took over administration but could not sell the monastery. In 1813, complete dissolution was decided, but the assets remained with the sisters, who were allowed to continue nursing in secular clothing. In 1829, the monastery was re-established by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. The hospital building was newly constructed in 1906 and expanded in 1929, 1953, and 1964. At the beginning of 2006, the ownership shares of the Elisabethinen and Caritas in St. Elisabeth Hospital were transferred to the Barmherzige Brüder Bavarian Province, with the city of Straubing remaining a co-owner.

The monastery continues to serve as a location for nursing care. The historic buildings are protected as a monument and bear witness to the order's long tradition in the region.
