Temple of Eshmun
The Eshmun Temple is a significant Phoenician cult site in Lebanon, dedicated to Eshmun, the god of healing and fertility. As the patron deity of Sidon, Eshmun played a central role in the region. The complex, whose origins date back to the 6th century BC, is located near modern-day Sidon and stands as a remarkable example of ancient architecture and religious devotion.
History+
The beginnings of the Eshmun Temple trace back to the 6th century BC. A pyramidal building from this period shows Babylonian influences. In the 5th century BC, the site was significantly expanded under King Eshmunazar and later under King Bodashtart of Sidon. The choice of location was likely motivated by a spring that originates there. During the Byzantine era, a church was built on the grounds, complemented by numerous mosaics. Since 1996, the Eshmun Temple has been on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
