Essen Minster, also known as Essen Cathedral, is the bishop's church of the Diocese of Essen and an example of Gothic architecture in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on Burgplatz in Essen's city center and houses the Golden Madonna, one of the oldest fully sculptural figures of Mary north of the Alps.

History+

The history of Essen Minster dates back to the 9th century, when Bishop Altfrid of Hildesheim founded a women's collegiate church around 845, around which the city of Essen developed. The first church on this site, a three-aisled basilica, was built between 845 and 870 and damaged by fire in 946. A reconstruction took place between 960 and 964, which included an outer crypt and a westwork under Abbesses Agana and Hathwig.
