Esterházysches Castle

The castle - also called Leisserhof - was built by Johann von Donnerskirchen in the 14th century. In 1605, the castle burned down in the Bocskay Uprising and was rebuilt in 1612 by Baron Christoph Leisser von Idolsberg und Kronseck. In 1653, the Esterházys acquired the Leisserhof. Under the Esterházys, the cellar was expanded into a central storage facility for all Esterházy estate and tithe wines. Even the wines from the ancestral castle Esterháza were brought to Donnerskirchen. This wine cellar can still be visited today.

The castle is a four-winged building with a rectangular courtyard. The oldest parts of the building date back to the 14th century. The castle was rebuilt in the 17th century after the fire and was given its present appearance. The castle has a chapel, which was built in the 18th century.

The Chapel

The chapel is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and was built in the 18th century. It is decorated with frescoes and stucco work. The altar was made in the 18th century and shows a painting of St. John the Baptist.
