Eyneburg Castle

The Eyneburg was first documented in 1260, at which time it was owned by the knightly family von Eyneberghe. This family, including Theoderich “de Eyneberghe” and Hermann von Eyneberg, shaped the early history of the complex. In 1371, the castle passed to the van den Bongaert family through marriage and later, around 1430, to the von Tzevel family. Another marriage brought the Eyneburg into the possession of the Dobbelstein family for about three centuries. After a fire in 1640, the castle was rebuilt and enlarged under Johann von Dobbelstein. In the 19th century, the Eyneburg saw several changes of ownership until it was acquired in 1897 by the Aachen cloth manufacturer Theodor Nellessen. He had the dilapidated complex extensively restored and expanded by Ludwig Arntz until 1901, during which time the current chapel was also built. In 1958, the Nellessen family parted with the castle, which was later placed under monument protection. Since 2001, it has belonged to Eyne GmbH, which aims to establish a center for immersive medieval experiences.

The Eyneburg is located in Hergenrath, a district of Kelmis, in the Liège province of the Walloon Region of Belgium. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 213 meters above sea level.

Today, the Eyneburg is privately owned and a closed complex, not accessible to the public. The complex includes the castle area with its keep and chapel, as well as an agricultural courtyard.
