Felsburg Castle

The first documented mention of Felsburg and the Counts of Felsberg dates back to 1060, while the town of Felsberg was mentioned in 1090. The Romanesque substructure of the castle, dating from the 11th century, is on a columnar basalt cone and once secured a strategically important ford of the Eder river on the old salt road. From 1090 to 1286, the castle was the seat of the Velisberc family. In 1238, the castle and town of Felsberg initially came under the Landgraviate of Thuringia and shortly thereafter under the Landgraviate of Hesse. Landgrave Heinrich II began expanding Felsburg from 1333, and its fortifications were strengthened several times until 1392. During the Mainz-Hessian War in 1427, Landgrave Ludwig I led his troops from here against the Mainz commander.
