The remains of the castle can be visited only from outside

The Buchfart Rock Castle, a complex in the Thuringian castle landscape, was probably built in the 10th century. It once extended up to 40 meters above the valley floor and comprised around twelve chambers and passages. Its special feature lies in its construction, which offered protection, although living conditions inside were considered extreme.

The origins of Buchfart Rock Castle likely date back to the 10th century. The Counts of Orlamünde were mentioned as lords of the castle, as were Landgrave Balthasar of Thuringia in 1393 and Count Otto in 1395. The complex was abandoned as early as 1440. The rock castle also attracted scholars: in 1551, the mineralogist Georgius Agricola ascended to the chambers, as he had been told of alleged troglodytes.
