The origins of Kaliakra Fortress date back to the 4th century BC, when the Thracians erected the first fortifications here, naming the site Tirisis. Later, the Romans took over the complex, referring to it as Akra. Under Byzantine rule, it became known as Akres Kastelum. In the Middle Ages, the fortress received its current name, Kaliakra, and in the 13th century, under Despot Dobrotiza, it rose to become the capital of a Bulgarian principality. The fortress was the scene of numerous conflicts, including the naval Battle of Kaliakra in 1791, where an Ottoman fleet was defeated by Russian warships.
