Fortress Mainz-Bastion Alexander

The Alexander Bastion belongs to the inner bastioned trace, which was laid out from 1655 under Johann Philipp von Schönborn. It was built in the second construction phase (1668-73) and was named after Pope Alexander VII (1655-66). The connection to the neighboring Georg Bastion apparently caused difficulties because the Alexander Bastion's flank directly abutted the face.

From 1876, the Rheingauwall, newly built as part of the city expansion, connected to the north of the Alexander Bastion. Only a few smaller wall remnants of this New Prussian fortification can still be found in the green area next to it. Shortly before the start of the First World War, three villas were built on the now militarily useless fortress structure, one of which served as the residence for the director of the new municipal hospital (today's University Hospitals).

Behind the Alexander Bastion stands the tower of the medieval city wall named after it, which rests on Roman foundations. Directly next to it is the Alexander Barracks.

The Alexander Bastion (Auf der Bastei) can be found today on Augustusstraße at the northern end of the Kästrich.
