Aarburg Fortress stands imposingly on a steep rocky spur above the town of the same name in the Canton of Aargau. This impressive complex is the only fully preserved fortress from the early modern period in Switzerland and is classified as a cultural asset of national importance.
History+
The origins of Aarburg Fortress date back to the early 12th century when a castle was built at this strategically important bottleneck of the Aare River. It was first indirectly mentioned in a document in 1123 in connection with Count Adalbero I of Frohburg. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, including the Barons of Büron and again the Frohburgers, before being sold to the Habsburgs in 1299. In 1415, the city of Bern conquered the castle and established a bailiwick there. Between 1659 and 1673, it underwent a massive expansion into a fortress over 400 meters long, intended to secure Bernese subject territories and serve as a prison. After its surrender without a fight to the French in 1798 and subsequent takeover by the Canton of Aargau in 1804, the fortress initially served as an armory and barracks, later again as a prison. Since 1893, it has housed a correctional facility for young people.
