Ajloun Fortress, also known as Qala'at ar-Rabad, is a ruin in northern Jordan. Built under Saladin, it served strategic purposes.
History+
Ajloun Fortress was constructed between 1184 and 1185 under the patronage of Sultan Saladin by his general Izz ad-Din Usama. Its primary function was to defend the area and ensure communication, forming part of a network of fortresses that transmitted messages via fire signals and carrier pigeons. In 1260, the castle was captured by the Mongols. An earthquake in 1837 caused damage. Restoration work was carried out between 1927 and 1929.
