Ajloun Fortress, also known as Qala'at ar-Rabad, is a significant ruin in northern Jordan. Originally built under Saladin, it served strategic purposes and stands today as a testament to medieval military architecture in the region.
History+
Ajloun Fortress was constructed between 1184 and 1185 under the patronage of Sultan Saladin by his general Izz ad-Din Usama. Its primary function was to defend the area and ensure communication, forming part of a network of fortresses that transmitted messages via fire signals and carrier pigeons. In 1260, the castle was captured by the Mongols. A severe earthquake in 1837 caused considerable damage. Extensive restoration work was carried out between 1927 and 1929.
