Ali Pasha Fortress (Kalaja e Ali Pashë Tepelenës)
In Butrint, a district of Saranda in Albania, lies the Ali Pasha Fortress, also known as Kalaja e Ali Pashë Tepelenës. It is located at the mouth of the Vivar Canal into the Ionian Sea. Its origins date back to the early 18th century, but its current form is attributed to Ali Pasha, who had it renovated around 1800.
History+
Venetian maps from 1718 show the complex, indicating an earlier construction. It is believed that the fortress was originally owned by the Corfiot Gonemi family before it came into the possession of Ali Pasha, who then extensively restored it.

The fortress lies directly at the mouth of the Vivar Canal into the Ionian Sea, approximately four kilometers west of Butrint, at an elevation of about 2 meters above sea level.

The remains of the fortress are preserved as a ruin today and can be visited.
