History+

The origins of Fort Liefkenshoek date back to 1584. It was constructed during the Eighty Years' War by the Duke of Parma, Alessandro Farnese, with the intention of blocking Dutch supply lines to Antwerp. This fort, along with other installations like De Perel, St. Maria, and St. Filips, was strategically positioned at a bend in the Scheldt river near Kallo. Following Belgian independence in 1830, Antwerp's defenses were reorganized. The city's fortifications, previously consisting of a Spanish city wall and various forts, became part of the so-called Wellington Barrier. Fort Liefkenshoek was a crucial component of the Scheldt defense. Over the centuries, Antwerp's defensive structures underwent multiple modernizations and expansions to meet evolving military requirements.
