Fortress of Arad

The Fortress can be visited

The Arad Fortress, an impressive historical structure, rises on the left bank of the Mureș River in Romania. Built in the 18th century, this complex once served as an important part of the military frontier with the Ottoman Empire and today fascinates visitors with its well-preserved architecture and rich history.

History+

After the Habsburg victory near Vienna in 1683 and the liberation of Arad from Ottoman rule in 1687, Prince Eugene of Savoy recognized the strategic importance of the location. By order of Empress Maria Theresa, General Architect Ferdinand Philipp von Harsch designed the plans for the fortress in the Vauban-Tenaille style. Construction, led by Johann Georg Haruckern, lasted from 1763 to 1783. Originally conceived as part of the military frontier, the fortress lost its strategic importance after the last Turkish war, but was used as one of the largest military prisons in the empire until 1918. Over the centuries, it housed various military units and has served the Romanian-Hungarian Peacekeeping Battalion since 1999.
