Asenow Fortress, an impressive medieval complex, is perched on a high rocky ridge in the Bulgarian Rhodopes. It once served as a strategic border fortification and today stands as a testament to a turbulent history.
History+
The origins of Asenow Fortress stretch back to the Thracian era, with the earliest archaeological findings. The site was also inhabited during ancient Roman and early Byzantine times. The fortress experienced its prime in 1231 under Tsar Ivan Asen II, who extensively developed it as a bulwark against the Latin Empire. Later, the fortress fell to the Ottomans and was destroyed by them.
