Baba Wida (Баба Вида) Fortress
In Vidin on the banks of the Danube stands the Baba Vida Fortress, a medieval structure and one of the most important cultural monuments in the region. It once served as the city's central defense system and the most significant fortress in northwestern Bulgaria.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to the 10th century, when its foundations were laid on the remains of a Roman observation tower from the fortress of "Bononia." It withstood a Byzantine siege for over eight months before being destroyed. Under Ivan Stratsimir, it was rebuilt. Towards the end of the 18th century, the fortress lost its military significance but still served as an arsenal and prison during Ottoman rule.

The Baba Vida Fortress houses a museum. The main part of the complex has been restored to its original state, surrounded by a moat and two fortress walls, with the inner wall featuring four main towers.
