Baba Wida (Баба Вида) Fortress
The Baba Vida Fortress, a prominent medieval structure, stands in Vidin on the banks of the Danube and is considered one of the most important cultural monuments in the region. It once served as the city's central defense system and the most significant fortress in northwestern Bulgaria.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to the 10th century, when its foundations were laid on the remains of a Roman observation tower from the fortress of "Bononia." Over the centuries, Baba Vida underwent numerous reconstructions and expansions. It withstood a Byzantine siege for over eight months before eventually being destroyed. Under Ivan Stratsimir, it was rebuilt. Towards the end of the 18th century, the fortress lost its military significance but still served as an arsenal and prison during Ottoman rule.
